Appealing an Audit
Tax appeals may be taken within the IRS itself, and then in the Tax Court or District Court. The IRS also has a special appeals process for cases where the amount in dispute is less than $25,000.
If you wish to appeal an IRS assessment, you may represent yourself or you may have an attorney or Certified Public Accountant represent you. In any case, it is important that the tax appeal be made in a timely manner and in the proper form to prevent you from losing your rights to the appeal.

You Have Rights
The IRS is required to notify you the first time a Notice of Federal Tax Lien is filed for each tax period. The IRS is also required to notify you the first time it intends to collect a tax liability, be it by taking away your property or levying your tax return.

Finally, if you have fully paid a tax or posted a bond for payment, the IRS must release any liens is has filed against your property.
